Introduction to Boatbuilding

If you have an interest in boat building but don’t know where to start, this is the class for you. We will be building a pair of wooden row boats. Most of the parts are precut and will be assembled with epoxy and temporary fasteners. The Bevin’s Skiff is 11’ 8” in length and the beam is 4’4”. It was developed at the Alexandria Seaport Foundation for easy assembly. While similar to historical Chesapeake Bay crabbing skiffs, it is also similar to quite a number of other small skiffs from various other regions. During the build process students will learn the basic parts of a wooden boat and the skills necessary to build in plywood and epoxy, a very strong, light weight composite. Each student will receive one ticket for the drawing for the skiffs. The raffle will conclude on August 15 with the drawings at Crab Crackin’ on the Lawn at Ker Place.  Proceeds of the drawing will benefit Shore History.

May 22 Update: the 2 Bevins Skiffs are assembled and on their way to Ker Place for the messy work of sanding and painting for the finishing!

thanks to our awesome crew of boatbuilders - Conrad, Scott, Angela, joe, Nathan, Geoff, Jim and other helpful hands, along with Leaders Bradley Howar and Mike Lohr.

Look for the upcoming Raffle where you might be the lucky owner of one of these awesome seaworthy vessels! More to come.
