“Never doubt that a small group of thoughtful, committed citizens can change the world. Indeed it is the only thing that ever has.” - Margaret Mead, anthropologist

The Historical Society welcomes volunteers, whether you would enjoy leading tours; digging into the Shore's rich history; or evaluating goods for the consignment shop. If you are interested in serving your community by making a small commitment of your time, please call us at 757.787.8012 or email us at marketing@shorehistory.org. We will find a time that is convenient for you. Just a few hours each month will make such a difference!

the face of ker place

Act as an Ambassador

Our docents are the everyday faces of the Historical Society as they lead tours and answer the public’s questions. Becoming a docent at Ker Place is easy - as easy as welcoming old friends into your own home. Docents receive training to learn about local history, and their knowledge is enhanced with field trips to other historic sites.

Come Dig our History

Do you like delving into historical records and objects? Do you like to get your hands dirty? The Historical Society is currently in the process of cataloging our collections, and we need your help. Attention to detail, some knowledge of computers, and the ability to work alone are all you need to get started. We’ll help you the rest of the way.

the rewards of retail

Deal in Treasures

Our upscale home goods consignment shop, the Dogwood Branch, is always looking for volunteers to price incoming consignments, set displays, and run the register. Sales skills and an eye for decorating are a plus, but if you are a people person and willing to learn the ways of retail, our shop personnel will bring you up to speed in no time.
