“Never doubt that a small group of thoughtful, committed citizens can change the world. Indeed it is the only thing that ever has.” - Margaret Mead, anthropologist

The Historical Society is always in need of volunteers, whether you like acting as a docent; teaching educational programs; digging into the Shore's rich history; or evaluating goods for the consignment shop. If you are friendly, outgoing, and love to meet new people, and if you are interested in serving your community by making a small commitment of your time, please call us at 757-787-8012 or email us at marketing@shorehistory.org. We will find a time that is convenient for you. Just a few hours each month will make such a difference!

Be an Ambassador

Our docents are the everyday faces of the Historical Society as they lead tours and answer the public’s questions. Becoming a docent at Ker Place is easy - as easy as welcoming old friends into your own home. Docents receive special orientation and training to learn about local history, and their knowledge is enhanced with field trips to other historic sites.

Educate Today's Youth

Our educational programs are always in need of volunteers to aid in teaching subject materials. We hold numerous programs throughout the year that can use your expertise. In addition, we use our three summer camps to educate youngsters on history, nature, and various kinds of art made locally.
