"The Poulsons of Onancock Creek" Book Signing & Q&A with Author Jeanette Treadwell Darnell

  • Ker Place 69 Market St. Onancock, VA 23417 USA (map)

Eight years in the making, "The Poulsons of Onancock Creek" shares the experience of young Charlotte as her family and town endure the tides of the American Civil War. Inspired by a tombstone in a small plot off Onancock's Hermitage Road, author Jeanette Darnell says, "An old cemetery found me, and I felt there was a story I was supposed to write."

Darnell's creative adaptation of Civil War history follows "Lottie" as Yankees make camp on her family's property along the Northern Branch of Onancock Creek, her father is arrested for being a Southern loyalist, and her brother and brother-in-law head off to the battlegrounds.

As Lottie's life changes with the waves of war, so does the future of her beloved Virginia and the fate of those in Lottie's life she holds most dear: her sister Kate, married to young Confederate surgeon Corbin Fletcher; her blockade-running gentleman caller, George Scarborough; and her young nephew, "Little Robbie."

The presentation and book signing will begin at 6 p.m. Aug. 3, at Ker Place, 69 Market St., in Onancock. Light hors d’oeuvres and a cash bar will be available. Admission is free, but reservations are appreciated. Call 757-787-8012 or email to save a spot.
